James Weeding was recruited by Norwood from the St Kilda Football Club and made his League debut for the Redlegs in Round 10, 1989, playing another four matches for the year.

An impressive looking key forward, he was strong, skilful and a good kick for goal.

Despite a poor run with injuries, he had become an important member of the league side in 1990 and was selected by Hawthorn in that year's mid-season draft.

Weeding kicked 69 goals in 1990 and won the club's goal-kicking award.

He moved to Hawthorn in 1991 but did not play a league game for the Hawks.
