BIO

Norman Walker is regarded as one of the finest ruckmen produced by the Norwood Football Club, having been recruited from Saint Peter’s College.

He was known for his exceptional strength but simultaneously, pundits wrote that he played the game with “great dexterity.”

When resting in a forward pocket, Walker became a potent weapon. In 1955 he topped the Club’s goal kicking with 39 goals and in 1957 he was again the leading goal kicker with 37 goals and also won the Club’s Best and Fairest Award.

In twelve State appearances Norman kicked a further 17 goals.

He was regarded as a player who could lift his side by his own efforts. An Advertiser report of a game against Glenelg in June, 1952 had this to say, “In the wet, the most pleasing performance in the Norwood side was that of Walker. This tall, fair-haired player was the principal driving force in Norwood’s rally.”

By 1953, he was regarded as being one of the certainties to be included in the Advertiser Team of the Year. An honour repeated in 1954 and 1955.

Norman Walker cemented his place as one of Norwood’s truly outstanding ruckman/forwards.
