John Vaughan was educated at Rostrevor College, and played first eleven cricket and first eighteen football for the school.
Vaughan was the North Adelaide Senior Colts captain in 1949, and made his league debut for North Adelaide (29/4/1950) versus Norwood, at Norwood. He was named on a half back flank and was impressive. The Redlegs however were comfortable victors.
Vaughan was moved to centre early in the season, but was also capable of playing in defence or attack.
He was at North Adelaide from 1950 to 1956, and played 58 Games (16 Goals).
Vaughan had a season with Norwood in 1958, where he made another five league appearances but spent most of the season in the Reserves.
Vaughan was named in the best players for the Norwood reserves in its Grand Final loss to Port Adelaide.
