Prior to pulling on a Norwood Guernsey, Fred Trickett had been on an interesting football journey. Born and bred in the North Adelaide District, Fred first played for the Thompson Memorial side in the North Adelaide Association. His performances either at half forward or on the wing gained the interest of North Adelaide and he gained selection in their league training list in 1948.
 
During the next two seasons he played mainly in their Association (Reserves) side and won selection in the State Association team that played the curtain-raiser to the South Australia versus Essendon game at Adelaide Oval in June 1948.

Not able to gain a permanent position in the league side, Trickett joined Walkerville in the Amateur League. Here he was spotted by Norwood and invited to take part in the 1951 pre-season trials. Fred made a positive impression and was included in the league training squad. Norwood applied for and gained his clearance from North.

At the time he was described as a lightly built wingman. He was 5ft.8ins(172cm) and weighed 11st.2 lbs (71kg) Considering that Norwood’s iconic wingman, Doug Olds, was even smaller in stature this was not seen as an issue.
Fred came at an opportune time for the Redlegs as Olds was sidelined for the early part of the season recovering from cartilage surgery. Trickett was seen as an able replacement. No sooner had Olds returned than fellow wingman Gallagher was briefly sidelined and again Fred filled the breach.

During this time he gained a reputation as a smart ground player. His two year, 25 game career saw Fred often used as a replacement for first choice half forwards and wingmen. As such Fred Trickett was a most important and valued team member.
