In 1985 Jarrod Thorpe represented Tasmania in the Teal Cup Under 17 National Championships held in Perth.
After playing Reserves for the Footscray Football Club (Victorian Football League), he transferred to Norwood for the 1988 season.
Thorpe made his league debut for Norwood in Round 4 of the 1988 pre-season Escort Cup competition and went on to play 17 senior games in his first year at The Parade.
A skilful footballer, Thorpe played forward then back for the Redlegs.
In 1989 he appeared another 14 times for the seniors.
Thorpe then transferred to Perth in the West Australian Football League, and later returned to play in Tasmania for North Launceston.
His father David Thorpe won two best and fairest awards with Footscray, and also captained the Bulldogs, before transferring to Richmond and winning a premiership.
