Richard Thomas impressed as a half-forward/half-back in the 1945 pre-season trials.

A local junior, he made his league debut for Norwood in the opening round of the season against North Adelaide. Thomas was named on a half-back flank, and Norwood won the match:15.14 to 10.14.

He was again in defence the following week, when Norwood played West Torrens.

Unfortunately he was dropped for the third round of matches.

Whilst he only played in four league games, the last two starting as 19th man, Thomas was unlucky not to play in many more, as he was named as a reserve in the league squad most weeks.
