A Gumeracha boy who says did not earn a single stat in his first league game in 2008, Matt Fuller developed into a reliable defender and was crowned Norwood’s best and fairest in 2016.
Matt was born in Adelaide on 1 June 1990 and grew up at Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills. He attended Gumeracha Primary School and Birdwood High School. He played junior football with the Gumeracha and Lobethal clubs before becoming a Norwood stalwart.
A left-footer, Matt kicked 17 goals in 34 games with the Norwood reserves, three goals in 10 games with the under 19s and nine goals in 16 games with the under 17s. He played one game with the under 18s in 2009 and that season earned selection in the state under 21 team.
A fond early memory was kicking the first goal against Glenelg in the 2010 league elimination final. He had a shoulder reconstruction in 2012 but came back strongly in 2013. Against Port Adelaide that season he says he played his “best game – the only time I managed to get a best on ground, I think”. Then, as a half-back flanker in the grand final, he was named in the best players as Norwood crushed North Adelaide, 10.12 to 4.8, before an AAMI Stadium crowd of 36,685. Playing on a half-back flank, Matt goaled with a towering bomb from nearly 50 metres out in the second quarter to help Norwood get on top for back-to-back premierships.
Between 2014 and 2015 he was drafted to the Western Bulldogs but did not play an AFL game. He returned to Norwood and provided good drive from half-back, as well as playing a number of games as a midfielder in 2017. He was appointed to the leadership group in 2017 and 2018.
Known to his mates as Ron, Ronald or La Roux, Matt names teammates James Gallagher, Stuart Bown and Matthew Dawes as having the biggest influence on his football.
After leaving Norwood, Matt, a construction worker, played football for Lobethal and coached the A grade team. He also played cricket for Lobethal.
