BIO
Nic Fosdike graduated from the ranks of an iconic Norwood football family to play a key role as a midfielder in the Sydney Swans’ 2005 AFL premiership triumph. Nic’s grandfather Bob Fosdike was a champion Norwood rover. Bob’s elder brother, Len, also donned the red and blue, as did Len’s nephews, Duncan and Simon Fosdike.
Born in Adelaide on 26 February 1880 to Dr Jenny and Craig Fosdike OAM, Nic attended Sacred Heart College with his brothers Matthew and Tom. Nic was in the same year at school as James Gallagher, who went on to captain Norwood and play for the Adelaide Crows.
Nic was an outstanding footballer at an early age. He kicked 29 goals in 20 games with the Norwood under 17s in 1996-1997 and then, at 18, was promoted to the league team. He kicked two goals in his first senior game as Norwood defeated North Adelaide 18.19 to 15.12.
After 13 league games, he was chosen by the Sydney Swans at number three in the 1998 AFL draft and went on to play 164 games between 1999 and 2009. He made his AFL debut in Round Five 1999 against the Adelaide Crows. With 26 disposals, he was one of the best men on the ground in the absorbing 2005 grand final as Sydney hung on to beat West Coast by four points, 8.10 to 7.12, after Leo Barry saved the day with a famous pack mark at the finish.
Nic injured a knee in the 2008 pre-season. He was restricted to one game, late in the season, and announced his retirement from the AFL in January 2009.
