Originally from Norwood Technical School, the slightly framed Barry Smith came through the club's Colts and Thirds. In 1969, Smith was Norwood's leading Magarey Medal vote-getter with 11 votes.
In 1971 he was cleared to South Gambier Football Club, after accepting an employment opportunity in the South-East.
Smith won the Western Border Football League Medal in 1971 and was an important player in South Gambier's 1974 Grand Final triumph over East Gambier.
