George Beames was a solid defender for the Norwood side for four seasons before World War 1. In 1914 at the age of 25, George enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). He embarked from Adelaide on October 20, 1914, aboard His Majesty’s Australian Transport (HMAT) A11 Ascanius along with fellow Norwood team-mates Phil Robin, Brunel Nash, Guy Stephens, Thomas Storey and Claude Toovey.

Like so many other footballers of his time, World War I interrupted his career before it had a chance to blossom.

He was wounded at Gallipoli in 1915 and was wounded again in France in 1916. In both cases he recovered and was able to continue his contribution to the war effort.

He married Christina Urquhart in Glasgow in 1918 and returned to Australia with Christina in 1919. On his return he was able to play a few league games in 1919 and finished his Norwood career playing for the Norwood B side in 1920, later playing some games for Sturt.

He was made a Life member of the club in 1920.
